A Slice of Sailing Heaven in Croatia, Kornati Islands

Ahoy there, land lovers! My name is Gilbert Seric and I love sailing as much as the next person, but what makes me a true fanatic is how I document my journeys across the Adriatic Sea. This time, I have a special treat for everyone to enjoy reading about. I’m sure you’ve already heard of the Kornati Islands, right? You haven’t? Oh, in that case, sit back, relax and enjoy a wonderful Gilbert sailing experience. We’ll make a sailor out of you after all.

The Kornati Islands are probably the densest group of islands in the Mediterranean and are situated between the islands Pašman, Dugi Otok and Zirje. The etymology of the name comes from the word corona, which means “a crown”. This name was given to the biggest attraction of the archipelago – the vertical cliffs and rocks that face the open sea. A fitting name, wouldn’t you say? A throne fit for Neptune or Poseidon, indeed.

The sheer beauty of the Kornati Islands are so astonishing that out of 152 natural bays of the Kornati Islands, 89 of them were declared a national park. Just think, all that beauty in one place. It’s enough to make a grown man cry. Sometimes there is so much beauty in the world, I feel like I can’t take it all at once, and my heart is just going to cave in. Truly, a spectacular feeling.

Keep in mind that all islands of the Kornati archipelago are also private property and that you must not litter or destroy the natural beauty so new visitors can always enjoy the untouched raw natural beauty. To show how much Croatia cares about its island, the Purara Island is off limits to everyone because it in a special protection area where people and boats are not allowed. This ensures that the nature is isolated from any kind of human influence.

Speaking of sailing, if you ever want to anchor somewhere near Kornati, the ACI Marina Piskera can be found between the islands of Panitula Vela and Piskera. You’ll soon find out that the Marina Piskera is very popular among yachtsmen because of the breathtaking scenery it provides. It is also very well sheltered from strong winds like the “bura” and has lots of berthing room. The cuisine is marvelous as always. You haven’t tasted food until you’ve visited Croatia The restaurants on the surrounding islands near Kornati offer various specialties. For example the brodet (fish stew), scampi stew and my personal favorite, octopus baked under an iron bell.

The heavenly sensation of sun, sea and smell of salt in the air will make you want to stay in Croatia forever. I know I would, but at least I get to go back every year with my family thanks to our sailing yacht. I hope you will get to experience such wonders in your life too.
